Be a VISTA with Common Roots

Updated: Jul 31, 2020

Great news! We’ve just been approved for another year in the AmeriCorps VISTA program, and we’re accepting applications now!

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) was created by President John F. Kennedy as a domestic counterpart to the Peace Corps. It is a national service program designed to fight poverty. Every year, 8,000 VISTA members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project.

Our region’s chapter of AmeriCorps VISTA is the Lake Effect Leaders (LEL), which is a regional partnership of Allegheny College, Gannon University and Mercyhurst University. The purpose of LEL is to build the capacity of government agencies, nonprofit organizations and schools to address issues related to poverty in Meadville and Erie.

Every year, LEL hires dedicated, passionate people to serve in Crawford County and Erie and work on projects related to areas of neighborhood revitalization, homelessness, education, health, the opioid crisis, refugees/new Americans and more.

Neighborhood revitalization is the segment Common Roots is most focused on. We're looking for someone to recruit and coordinate volunteers, help manage our public identity/communication and support a grassroots fundraising campaign for the renovation of our house at 1189-91 South Main St. in Meadville.

We’ve already started receiving applications, so if you’re interested in joining the Common Roots team, apply today!
